Inspiring the Next Generation

As another exciting month comes to an end, Navan Hockey Club certainly isn't slowing down. Over the past few weeks, we've continued introducing hockey to loads of local children, welcomed new members through our Walking and Social Hockey programs, and are now looking forward to another exciting Summer Hockey Camp.

Whether you're six years old or sixty, there really is something for everyone at Navan Hockey Club!

Over the past four weeks, Navan Hockey Club has had the privilege of introducing the wonderful sport of field hockey to loads of enthusiastic 4th Class pupils across Navan. Our coaches John, Margie, Helen and Nicolene visited five local primary schools:

St Joseph's Mercy Primary School
St Anne's Loreto Primary School
Scoil Naomh Eoin Primary School
Ard Rí Community National School
St Paul's Primary School

The aim of the program was simple, introduce children to hockey in a fun, engaging and encouraging environment while teaching them the basic skills of the game. What followed was four fantastic weeks filled with smiles, excitement and plenty of hidden talent. Every school embraced the program with incredible enthusiasm, and it was wonderful to see so many children eager to learn something new. Many of the pupils had never held a hockey stick before, yet by the end of the program they were confidently dribbling, passing, tackling and working together as teams. The future of hockey in Navan certainly looks bright!

Primary Schools Blitz

To celebrate the completion of the coaching program, Navan Hockey Club hosted a Primary Schools Blitz at our hockey pitches beside Aura Leisure Navan. The day simply would not have been possible without our fantastic volunteers. A huge thank you goes to: Bronagh, Finn, Aaron, Hugo, Oscar, Allain, Molly, Leah, Gemma, Amabel, Ava, Jack and Katie for giving up their Saturday to umpire matches, assist with organization and help ensure every child enjoyed their day. Their enthusiasm and willingness to volunteer made a tremendous difference and kept the event running smoothly from start to finish.

Everyone arrived bright and early at 9:30am to prepare the pitches before welcoming the schools for a warm-up ahead of the first games at 10:00am. Throughout the morning the pitches were filled with excitement, encouragement and friendly competition. Every match showcased the incredible progress the children had made over just four weeks, with many displaying fantastic stick skills, teamwork and confidence. The standard of hockey was so impressive that several matches even ran a little longer than planned as everyone wanted to keep playing! At the conclusion of the Blitz we were delighted to present awards to recognise both individual and team performances.

Congratulations to every child who took part. More important than the trophies were seeing so many smiling faces enjoying hockey together. A sincere thank you also goes to all the teachers, parents, guardians and bus drivers who helped make the day such a wonderful success. A special thank you to Meath Sports Partnership for helping make this program possible through their support and funding of the equipment used during the four-week coaching program and the Primary Schools Blitz. Their contribution has allowed us to introduce hockey to so many young players across Navan, and we are incredibly grateful for their continued support. We look forward to working together on many more initiatives in the future as we continue to grow the game within our community.
